Our list outlines just some of the many home repair grants available in Ontario. Please note that these grants were available in 2017. Some changes, revisions, or removals may occur in 2018. Home Repair Grants In Ontario, Canada

There are home repair grants available for many different people in many different circumstances. See the list below for a brief description of some of the government grants available in Ontario and a link to find out more information. Grants For Low-Income Homeowners

See below for home repair and renovation grants available to those who qualify as low-income homeowners in Ontario.

Home Repair Funding (Ontario Renovates) – Region of Waterloo

Grant Amount: Up to $25,000 in forgivable loans
Available To: Residents depending on income and value of your home (cannot exceed $403,635)

Summary: This grant is available to those who want to improve the quality of their home by making repairs or making it more accessible. Ontario Renovates provides forgivable loans of up to $25,000 to those who want to keep their homes in good repair, add accessibility items such as ramps, alarms, or bath lifts, or build a separate apartment in your home. Home Repair Program – York Region

Grant Amount: Up to $7,500
Available To: Low – moderate-income homeowners in York Region

Summary: This grant is available only to those in the York Region. The Home Repair Program offers grants of up to $7,500 a year (up to a lifetime maximum of $15,000) for those who qualify as low or moderate income homeowners in the York Region. The grant can be used to make the home more accessible for homeowners with disabilities (e.g. adding a ramp or walk-in shower), or it can be used to make the home safer (e.g. critical furnace repairs, significant roof repairs, etc.) For more information, visit York.ca – Home Repair Program.

Ontario Electricity Support Program – Ontario Energy Board

Grant Amount: Reduction of electricity bill (based on a variety of factors)
Available To: Low-income households

Summary: This is an ongoing program that allows those who qualify as low-income households to receive a reduction on their energy bills. Saving on energy bills each month can help owners use those funds towards other necessary home improvements. The amount refunded is based on household income. Grants For Seniors

Provincial Land Tax Deferral Program for Low-Income Seniors and Low-Income Persons with Disabilities

Grant amount: Partial deferral of provincial land tax and education tax
Available To: Low-income seniors & low-income persons with disabilities

Summary: This grant is available to low-income seniors and low-income persons with disabilities. You may qualify for a partial deferral of provincial land tax and education tax. To claim this tax deferral you must have owned a farm or property that was used as your principal residence for at least one year and qualify for other terms listed by the Ontario Ministry of Finance. Though this tax deferral program does not directly provide funding for repairs, it can help make repairs and renovations more affordable for individuals as they will pay less in taxes.

Grants For Homeowners With Disabilities

See below for home repair grants available to disabled homeowners in Ontario.

Home and Vehicle Modification Program – March of Dimes Canada

Grant Amount: Up to $15,000
Available To: Those with disabilities that restrict mobility

Summary: This grant can provide up to $15,000 for those with disabilities that restrict mobility. The grant must be used towards home or vehicle modification that will help accommodate adults and families who have children with disabilities. This grant is intended to be given to those who are most in need and used as a last resort. More information is available from March of Dimes Canada.

Easter Seals Financial Assistance

Grant Amount: Up to $3,000
Available To: Families with children, youth, and young adults up to 19 years old with mobile disabilities

Summary: This grant can provide up to $3,000 for children, youth, and young adults up to 19 years of age with mobile disabilities. The grant is intended to be used to help fund home renovations or equipment that will help accommodate children and young adults in their home. Learn more from Easter Seals.

Grants In Toronto

Home Energy Loan Program (HELP)

Grant Amount: low-interest loan up to $75,000
Available To: Homeowners looking to reduce carbon footprint

Summary: Homeowners who seek to make repairs or renovations to their home with the intention of reducing their carbon footprint/making home energy improvements can qualify for a low-interest loan of up to $75,000. Some renovations or repairs that qualify include new windows or doors, high-efficiency water heaters and furnaces, air sealing, and more. Learn more at Toronto.ca


Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program

Grant Amount: Up to $3,400
Available To: Toronto residents looking to protect basement from flooding

Summary: This program offers up to $3,400 for homeowners who want to help protect their basement from flooding. Home improvements covered by this grant include the addition of a sump pump, backwater valve, or a foundation drain. Learn more at Toronto.ca.

Grants in Hamilton

Emergency Repair Program 

Grant Amount: Up to $5,000
Available To: Those who need serious home repairs

Summary: The Emergency Repair Program offers grants of up to $5,000 and is open to Ontario Works (OW) and Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) homeowners. You may qualify for this grant if your home needs serious, urgent repairs that would otherwise adversely affect those living in the home. Learn more at Hamilton.ca.


Residential Protective Plumbing Loan Program

Grant Amount: Loan up to $2,000
Available To: Hamilton residents looking to prevent flooding

Summary: This program provides a loan of up to $2,000 for residents of Hamilton, Ontario looking to improve their home with protective plumbing equipment. Renovations included in this program are the addition of a sump pump, the installation of a backwater valve, and disconnection of downspouts. Learn more at Hamilton.ca.
